We are a group of students volunteering at the Gozo SPCA. We are well aware of the present situation regarding abandoned animals and due to our love for animals we want to raise awareness for animal rights.

In order to be compliant with the regulations in the new Animal Welfare Act, Gozo SPCA needs larger premises for the dogs and cats to reside in. Since the society has a very limited amount of space and their current headquarters is not adequate for the animals, they will be closing down by the end of next year if help is not offered.

The government can help this situation by providing a more suitable location where the cats and dogs can have a better quality of life than they currently have. Until that happens, the issue is that they cannot accept more animals. This means that there are more strays that end up injured in traffic accidents, poisoned or shot. Does the public expect Gozo SPCA to put healthy dogs to sleep so as to prevent this problem? We know that currently Gozo SPCA does not have healthy animals put to sleep.

It will be immensely appreciated if anyone could help the SPCA by adopting a pet, giving donations or volunteering to help at the centre. If so please contact Gozo SPCA by phone on 2155 3769, e-mail: info@spca-gozo.org or online: www.spca-gozo.org.
