Gozo General Hospital’s new €3.2 million Radiology Unit, co-financed by the European Regional Development fund, is expected to open by the end of the year.

Structural work is well underway after the removal of an old ceiling made of asbestos.

The hall housing the unit is being expanded and electrical and water systems are being put in place along with supplementary services such as medical gases, nurse call, fire alarm, air conditioning and data network systems.

Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono, visiting the works, said: “The project was undertaken in light of the 2007-2013 National Strategy, which is aimed at addressing accessibility to medical services and improving Gozo residents’ quality of life.”

The Radiology Unit will offer spiral CT scanning and digital mammography, services that were not previously available in Gozo.

The Gozo Ministry will also be acquiring two new ambulances, which will be paid for out of national funds.
