Leading open sea swimmers, currently dominating the general classifications in Birkirkara St Joseph SC's 2004 Open Sea Series, will be on the starting line for tomorrow's 4.9-kilometre Gozo-Malta crossing.
Birkirkara SJ are again organising the event in conjunction with Ir-Razzett tal-Hbiberija with the aim of raising funds for this charitable institution.
Mark Zammit's victory in last week's latest leg from the Open Sea Series at Sliema-San Giljan's four-kilometre coastal swim, gives the budding swimmer an edge to reach Cirkewwa first tomorrow. The experience of Nicky Farrugia in such events should never be discarded though.
Tara Baldacchino should meet no problems in carrying the honours in the women's category with Nicole and Angele Cremona the outside contenders.
Thirty-four will be swimming across the channel accompanied by escort boats. Another group of swimmers will be there just for the challenge or to raise funds for Ir-Razzett tal-Hbiberija.
The race starts at Hondoq ir-Rummien at 7 a.m.
