Thirteen local councils in Gozo have come together to organise Gozo 1234, a programme for tourists and locals taking place between May 1 and 4, hence the name.

The activities taking place across the island will range from picking fruit to touring a war shelter, arts and crafts to classic cars, theatre to horse riding. Or what about a historical re-enactment? In total, there are no less than 99 things to see and do throughout the weekend. At night, the island will become one large feast: Concerts, shows, dinner, street entertainment, buskers and fireworks.

Lou Bondì, one of the organisers, said that the event merges the best features of Lejlet Lapsi, Notte Gozitana and the fireworks festival.

"The emphasis for everyone to enjoy themselves as they please and when they please," explained Mr Bondì. "Our aim is to make those returning to Malta recount that although they've been to Gozo before, they've never seen or experienced it as during the Gozo 1234 events."

Cultural activities, musical activities, food, walks, children's theatre, museums, art, representations, sports, agro-tourism, dance and much more will be held during the day.

During the evening, a concert will be held in Marsalform on May 1, Nadur on May 2 and Rabat on May 3.

Fireworks factories from Denmark, Gozo, Malta and Italy will also be participating. Fireworks shows will take place in Marsalforn on May 1, Nadur on May 2 and Rabat on May 3.

During the evening activities, a shuttle service will operate between Mġarr and the above localities.

For a programme of the events taking place in the 13 localities (Fontana, Għajnsielem, Għarb, Għasri, Marsalforn, Mġarr, Munxar, Nadur, Qala, Rabat, Xagħra, Xewkija and Xlendi) log onto www.visitmalta.com. Furthermore, programmes will be available from Gozitan hotels and local councils, among others.

Meanwhile, Gozo Channel is offering reduced rates on the occasion. Foot passenger tickets sell at €1.40 (60c) and driver and car tickets sell at €8.35 (Lm3.58) between 1.30 p.m. on Wednesday and midnight on Saturday. Programmes are also available from the ferries.

Gozo 1234 is being organised by Burning Spear, a consortium composed of Where's Everybody and Nexos Lighting.
