The government is owed €49.5 million in overdue payments of national insurance contributions by employers, parliament was told today.

Finance Minister Tonio Fenech said that the contributions were due from 6,631 employers.

In 2008, 1,033 employers were late in their payments. The outstanding amount was €3,397,635.

The number of employers and the amounts due for more than two years were as follows:
