The government has sent a note verbal to the Holy See requested talks aimed at revising the 1992 Church-State agreement related to marriages.

The agreement had given the Ecclesiastical Tribunal the final say in marriage cases, but the government argues that the Civil Courts should be supreme, in line with the separation of Church and State.

In a brief statement, the government said that this issue was discussed on March 22 during a meeting between Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, Archbishop Paul Cremona and Auxiliary Bishop Charles Scicluna.
