The government has prepared a mechanism based on the Rent Law amendments of 2010 for the Social Policy Minister to be able to issue regulations setting up rental rates that were fairer and more in line with judgements presented by the Courts.

Replying to a parliamentary question by Nationalist MP Jason Azzopardi, Parliamentary Secretary Owen Bonnici said the government understood that rates could not be pushed up stratospherically but a balance had to be created. The mechanism would seek to create such balance.

The government wanted to save whatever could be saved of pre-1995 contracts. Solutions may not be popular but the mechanisms proposed would be the most acceptable to safeguard the rights of both property owners and tenants.

He said that the mechanism was prepared in consultation with Opposition deputy leader Beppe Fenech Adami.
