The government this morning welcomed the Iran nuclear talks deal announced by the negotiating parties in Lausanne, Switzerland.

In a statement this morning, the government said the result, which followed months of intensive and difficult negotiations by the European Union, France, Germany, the United States of America, the People's Republic of China, the Russian Federation and the United Kingdom (EU 3+3) and the Islamic Republic of Iran was "highly encouraging".

This framework agreement, the government said, presented a unique opportunity for a lasting agreement with Iran, and Malta looked forward to the end of the process in June.

"This bodes well for reaching a more detailed and binding final draft," the government said.

Foreign Minister George Vella extended his appreciation of the hard work put in by all parties and expressed hope the agreement would serve to lessen tensions in the Middle East and beyond.
