The government is planning to widen the remit the responsibility of the National Commission for the Promotion of Equality to also encapsulate human rights, Civil Rights Minister Helena Dalli said this morning.

Speaking during a visit to the Mosta Primary School which she toured with Education Minister Evarist Bartolo on the occasion of International Day against Racial Discrimination being celebrated today, Ms Dalli said issues of equality and discrimination should be targeted at a very young level such as primary schools.

Society, she said, was becoming increasingly multi-cultural and should harbour respect towards inclusivity.

She hoped one would no longer need to speak about discrimination when this generation became adult.

Mr Bartolo said that children accepted diversity more than adults. He said that there were more than 30 cultures and nationalities in some Maltese schools.

“In the past we used to talk about a global class room. These children live it,” he said.
