PN deputy leader Beppe Fenech Adami revealed this evening that the Opposition had turned down a proposal by the government to put off local council elections throughout this legislature.

In an interjection in Parliament, Dr Fenech Adami said the proposal had been made on behalf of the government by Labour MP Michael Falzon.

The government, he said, did not want local council elections to be held throughout the legislature for various reasons such as the EU presidency.

This, he said, was something which was unacceptable to the PN.

The interjection was made during a speech by the prime minister, who expressed surprise over a call by the leader of the opposition for talks on the electoral law. As far as he knew, he said, talks were already being held in the past weeks and months.

Dr Fenech Adami said the only proposal made by the government was about putting off the local council elections.

Michael Falzon said that after a proposal was made and rejected, another proposal was made and the Opposition never replied to it.

Dr Fenech Adami said local council elections had nothing to do with the General Elections Act.

PARTY FUNDING

Dr Muscat augured that fruitful talks would be held on the general elections.

He also referred to party funding legislation, and said that while the government had everything ready to move forward, it has held off in order not to be accused of doing anything which could be interpreted as acting against the PN while it had financial problems.
