The environmental NGO Nature Trust (Malta) has urged Mepa and the government to rehabilitate Hondoq ir-Rummien Bay in Gozo, rather than allowing the development of a yacht marina there.

The small bay has a disused water distillation station right behind the beach, while a long-disused quarry can be seen along one side of the road as one drives down.

Nature Trust said the proposed development of a yacht marina and other tourist facilities went against the Eco Gozo concept.

Rather than the site being given for speculation and over development, the authorities should embark on rehabilitating this area with afforestation, nature trails and natural heritage concepts for the enjoyment of all Maltese and tourists alike, the NGO said.

It added that the national authorities should focus on existing built up areas to further improve tourism rather then continue to allow development in Outside Development Zones.
