The chairman of the anti-divorce movement, Andrè Camilleri, insisted today that divorce was not a solution to marriage break-ups, and he urged the government and society in general to understand why some marriages were failing.

The government, he said at an activity in Gozo, needed to be involved in the preparation of couples for marriage.

Mr Camilleri said the divorce bill currently before parliament would undermine the values of unity and stability in the family and the people should therefore reject divorce when they vote in the referendum on Saturday.

Anti-divorce movement member Anna Vella called on people to reflect on how divorce would affect children and the family unit. She pointed out that the proposed law did not put a limit on how many times one could divorce and stressed that children would suffer the most.

Nationalist MP Fredrick Azzopardi, a member of the audience, shared his thoughts and pointed out that those who voted against divorce were not doing so because they were insensitive. He said divorce would harm people and society.
