Nationalist MP Robert Arrigo argued in Parliament this evening that the government would actually make money from its promise to reduce energy tariffs by 25%.

He explained in an adjournment speech that at the time when Labour promised to cut bills by 25%, the price of oil was far higher than it is now.

25% of energy costs two years ago, when the promise was made, was different from what 25% amounted to now, when producing electricity was cheaper,  and would leave a net balance in the government's favour.

If the country was to be competitive when compared to other countries, tariffs needed to follow the decline in the oil costs, he said.

POSITIONS OF TRUST

Mr Arrigo referred to a series of parliamentary questions he had asked about engagement of persons in positions of trust by the government.

It appeared, he said, that 386 persons had been engaged on positions of trust by the 23 government ministries and parliamentary secretariats. With annual compensation of €40,000 including perks, these persons were costing the country between €14m and €15m per year. The cost for the five years of the legislature would be €70 million.

CRAFTS VILLAGE SHOULD INCLUDE ARTISTS

Mr Arrigo also referred to the plans to develop the Crafts Village in Ta’ Qali. He said the concept should be broadened to make this an Arts and Crafts Village.

This would be appreciated by artists who needed popular spaces where to display their works.

Mr Arrigo urged the government to clarify questions which the current tenants had about the project.
