The concept of shared revenue is to be discussed with councils in the coming weeks to see how it could be applied to Malta, Parliamentary Secretary Jose Herrera said.

Speaking during the inauguration of new offices for the Local Councils’ Association in Marsa, Dr Herrera said this was another way of how councils could generate funds for their locality.

He said that although the budget for local councils next year remained the same as this year’s, the Government was coming up with schemes and finding other means of how councils could empower their locality more.

He said that a white paper on a reform in the local enforcement system was to be presented to Cabinet in the coming days and would then be issued for the public.

The government would allow four months for the necessary discussions to take place before implementing the reform. It was also working on an inter-ministerial project to offer a service in the community that would make take councils closer to the people.
