The Government does not see any conflict of interest between Labour MP Silvio Schembri’s role as chairman of the parliamentary committee for economic and financial affairs and the full-time consultancy job he has landed at the Economy Affairs Ministry.

A spokesman for the Prime Minister’s Office said that according to standing orders, the role of the parliamentary committee  was not that of scrutinising the government’s economic policies, which were determined by the Economy Ministry.

He said the work of the committee was to consider, from an economic and financial perspective, any decision, recommendation or report published locally, by the European institutions or by international organisations that could have an impact on the Maltese economy.
