The government said today that talks on the possibility of Alitalia buying a stake in the Maltese airline are continuing.

The government was reacting to unsourced Italian media reports that Alitalia had stopped the talks.

"Government takes note of the various reports published in the media today and of the fact that none of these quote official sources. On the contrary, talks are still ongoing," the government said in its vaguely-worded statement.

"As previous statements indicated, the government will keep addressing issues at Air Malta that had been left pending for years."
