Finance Minister Tonio Fenech yesterday rebutted accusations by Labour MP Silvio Parnis over the fact that the government has failed to appoint a consumer protection authority.

Mr Fenech said the setting up of the authority does not directly involve the staff of the National Euro Changeover Committee but will be based on the committee's success and experience.

Meanwhile, Mr Fenech added, the Consumer and Competition Division has been defending the consumer's interests by monitoring establishments.

Furthermore, as opposed to Mr Parnis' claims that the Medical Committee has not met in over a year, Mr Fenech said that this same committee has in fact met eight times since April.
