The government has proposed to the Opposition that Richard Cachia Caruana should be invited to a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Committee to answer any questions which the Opposition may have.

The Opposition last week gave notice of a motion in parliament calling for Mr Cachia Caruana's resignation over a Wikileak which, it claimed, showed how Mr Cachia Caruana was working for Malta's re-admission in the Partnership for Peace behind Parliament's back.

Mr Cachia Caruana is Malta's permanent representative to the European Union.

The prime minister on Sunday said the Opposition's motion showed 'gross incompetence' because the subject of the wikileak (made public a year ago) was actually about access of particular Nato documents for Malta. Membership of PfP had nothing to do with it.

PN parliamentary group whip David Agius said this morning on TVAM that the Opposition motion was discussed at yesterday's meeting of the PN parliamentary group. He said that since Mr Cachia Caruana could not speak in a parliamentary debate, the government has proposed to the Opposition that Mr Cachia Caruana should be invited to a meeting of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, where the Opposition could ask him whatever it liked, and he could reply.

No reply has been received from the Opposition.
