The government is working on a holistic plan to utilise St Luke's Hospital, which has been abandoned for the past seven years, the Parliamentary Secretary for Health, Chris Fearne, said this evening.

A call for expressions of interest on the basis of the plan will be issued for the use of the building, in association with local or foreign investors, Mr Fearne said on Reporter on TVM during a discussion on health.

He said the building in Guardamangia should be used as a whole rather than being cannibalised.

TAX INCENTIVE FOR HEALTH INSURANCE

Referring to the forthcoming Budget, he said the government was considering a tax rebate for those holding a private healthcare insurance policy. Talks with the insurance association are at an advanced stage.

However, he said, the government would like to see the removal of private insurance provisions which gave holders financial encouragement to use state services, even though such people would continue to have the choice of using private or public medical services.
