The government and the Medical Association have reached agreement in an industrial dispute which had threatened to lead to major industrial action next week.

The agreement was reached in talks between Social Policy Minister John Dalli, MAM President Martin Balzan and UHM President Gejtu Tanti.

The MAM had warned of strike action over a shortage of doctors and over their redeployment.

The two sides said that for the period up to June 15, the GP service in health centres will be operated as at present except for the Gzira health centre, where the service will stop between 5 p.m. and 8 a.m.

The doctors currently deployed at Gzira health centre in the evening will be deployed in the other three health centres (Paola, Floriana and Mosta) with the same timetables as they are currently deployed.

The two sides will during this period discuss all items they had agreed upon in last Monday's agreement (reached after the MAM ordered the doctors not to work in three health centres).
