The Nationalist Party accused the government today of failing to act after an upsurge of burglaries in Sliema, Swieqi, St Julian's, Gżira and San Ġwann.

Instead of government action, the people were being left to fend for themselves, the shadow minister for home affairs, Beppe Fenech Adami said.

People were afraid of going out, going abroad, or keeping valuables in their home, he said. Many were also replacing their door locks.

Dr Fenech Adami said that while the majority of policemen did their duty, they lacked the numbers and the resources to adequately fight crime.

Instead of spending millions on corrupt deals to people close to it, the government needed to invest in the police force, giving the force more manpower and equipment to fight crime, Dr Fenech Adami said.

He expressed solidarity with people who have suffered crime or were afraid to leave their home for fear of being burgled.
