A government-appointed committee is making recommendations on the preservation  of trees in both urban and rural areas, Sustainable Development Minister Leo Brincat said this morning.

The committee is composed of Alfred E. Baldacchino, Charles F. Grech, Steve Borg, Anna Spiteri and Pamela Hansen, who are working on a voluntary basis.

The committee is also making recommendations against excessive pruning.

A plan will also be drafted on effective regulation of woodlands, and practices by operators.

Mr Brincat said some current practices regarding trees by people involved in landscpaing and some local councils  were unacceptable. Pruning, he said, would be controlled by legal notice.
