The government has agreed with an Opposition proposal for the Auditor-General to investigate Arms Ltd.

The call for the investigation was made in a motion which started to be debated in Parliament this afternoon.

The Opposition motion expresses concern over the management of Arms Ltd, the company responsible for the billing services of Enemalta and the Water Services Corporation and calls on the House to request the Auditor-General to conduct an inquiry into how the company was set up, how the top management was appointed and how the company had been unable to provide the service expected to it.

The Opposition motion also called for publication of the Smart Meter contract and an investigation on how it was awarded. Those requirements were cancelled in the government amendments.

At the start of the sitting, Finance Minister Tonio Fenech moved amendments to the Opposition motion.

He proposed deletion of parts of the Opposition motion criticising the company, and substituted them with a paragraph saying that the House welcomed recent actions by Arms Ltd to improve its operations.

The amendment also provide that the Auditor-General's report would be discussed in the Public Accounts Committee.
