Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said today that a draft Bill on the financing of political parties has been handed to legal experts for their comments.

Replying to questions at a press conference this morning, Dr Gonzi said the draft will then be discussed by the political parties.

"We do not want this to be a unilateral decision," he said.

He added that the government was not considering state funding of political parties, and he indicated that the draft was prepared on the lines of the recommendations made in the Galdes Report in 1995.

The report had, among other things, proposed the capping of donations to the parties and the identification of donors.

"We are not trying to invent the wheel, but there are various aspects which the legal esperts need to look into," Dr Gonzi said.

The draft was prepared by Parliamentary Assistant Franco Debono.
