Good Earth Distributors is recalling its conventional and organic quinoa products after elevated pesticide levels were identified in the organic range.

The pesticide levels – which were above the maximum parameters recommended by European legislation – were detected during a routine test by an accredited laboratory, said a company spokesman.“As far as we are aware, the products do not represent a health risk, but we have issued the recall as a precaution on the basis of our commitment to our consumers’ health,” the spokesman said.

Quinoa, a South American grain, has rapidly gained popularity across the world in recent years due to its health benefits, which include a high protein content. Good Earth’s products are imported from Peru and Bolivia and the organic range does not typically contain any pesticides whatsoever, according to the company spokesman.

The high pesticide levels appear to have originated with the company’s suppliers, whose provided certification and test results did not tally with Good Earth’s own independent testing.

In a statement, the company said it was currently identifying the stock and had blocked the unsold product. Consumers who have already purchased the product were advised to return it to Hard Rocks Industrial Park, Burmarrad Road, Naxxar, NXR 6345, Monday to Friday between 8am and 5pm for a full refund.

Concerned customers were also invited to call Customer Care on 2143 1309or to send an e-mail to info@goodearth.com.mt for more information.
