British Prime Minister David Cameron yesterday assured his Maltese counterpart he was “aware” of the implications the situation in Libya and the North African region would have on Malta.

In a letter to Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, Mr Cameron thanked Malta for its assistance in the evacuation of British nationals from Libya. He also confirmed arrangements had been made for Dr Gonzi’s official visit to London, set for May 10.

Mr Cameron had already thanked Malta publicly in a statement he gave to the House of Commons soon after the evacuation efforts started.

In his letter, he said he was “immensely grateful” for the way Malta had “generously” supported the UK team.

“Once again Malta finds itself at the centre of world attention and, as in previous times, you have demonstrated your resilience and fortitude... I am aware that the unfolding events in the Middle East and North Africa will have enormous implications for Malta,” he said.

“This underlines the importance of continuing to work together both bilaterally and through the EU, to shape a secure and prosperous future for all Mediterranean countries.”
