Michelle Wie equalled her worst score in a professional men's tournament after opening with a nine-over-par 81 at the Casio World Open yesterday.

The Honolulu schoolgirl began her round on the back nine overlooking the Pacific Ocean but was left with a sinking feeling after carding nine bogeys at a drizzly Kuroshio Country Club.

Wie missed the cut by a single shot at last year's World Open but she struggled hugely off the tee in the wet and chilly conditions in yesterday's opening round.

Wie ended the first round last out of 102 players. Only Japanese university student Tomomichi Oto fared worse with an 83.
