Gift of Life, the pro-life lobby group, has urged Malta's five MEPs to support an amendment to the EU's annual budget for overseas development banning the allocation of funds to organisations or countries which promote family planning programmes which include an element of compulsion (e.g. coercive abortion and involuntary sterilisation).

The amendment is being moved by MEP Konrad Szymanski-Nirj Deva and will be voted upon on Thursday.

"This important amendment is about protecting women and children from ‘forced' abortions, sterilization as well as infanticide in countries such as India and China and Peru. Maltese citizens who contribute financially to the European Commission's annual budget for overseas development do not want the EU to fund any form of forced abortion, forced sterilization and infanticide. Our MEPs are our voice in Europe and we hope that they will listen to the people who placed their trust in them in the last MEP elections," Gift of Life said.
