The demolition of the central part of City Gate was completed this morning.

Water was constantly sprayed to avoid dust as huge mechanical scissors and jack hammers cut away what remained of the steel and stone structure.

The operation was witnessed by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, Infrastructure Minister Austin Gatt and Lands Parliamentary Secretary Jason Azzopardi.

The demolition work started on Tuesday and the whole process, including the demolition of the row of arches under Pope Pius Street, including the former shops along the west side of Freedom Square is expected to be completed within three weeks.
