MOSTA 3 (Mensah 11, 71 Okonkwo 25)
PEMBROKE ATHLETA 5 (Gustavo 27, 32,85, O’Brien 42, Micallef 60)

Pembroke and Mosta had no pressure weighing down on their shoulders going into their final match of the season.

As one might have expected, the match was generally played in a good sporting spirit as the two sides transformed this end-of-season fixtures into an entertaining, high scoring match featuring no fewer than eight goals.

Pembroke came from two goals behind to edge Mosta 5-3 and end the league commitments with something to smile about.

Mosta enjoyed a dream start as, within 11 of the initial whistle, they took the lead. Zackary Brincat’s swerving shot eluded the hesitant Matthew Farrugia and Godwin Mensah was quick to capitalise with a rising shot.

On 25 minutes, Mosta doubled their lead. James Brincat made a good progress down the left chance before setting up Donatus Okonkwo who evaded the goalkeeper’s attempt at blocking his run to slot the ball home.

But Pembroke went on to replicate their opponents’ early two-goal flurry by scoring two goals in five minutes. First, Gustavo da Silva hammered the ball past the helpless Omar Borg after receiving a pass from Alex Cini. Then, the same striker ran the whole pitch, before pondering his options and slotting the ball behind Borg for the second time.

Pembroke’s two-goal comeback revived interest in the game as a contest. In their next attack, Winston Muscat’s side moved in front. Gustavo turned provider to roll the ball towards Kyle O’Brien who fired low into the net.

Pembroke’s improved display delivered another goal on the hour mark. At the end of a prolonged move, Manolito Micallef twisted and turned inside the box before arrowing his effort behind Borg.

After 71 minutes, Mosta earned a life-line when Rennie Tanti brought Kyle Frendo down in the area. Referee Sandro Spiteri pointed to the spot, Mensah sent Farrugia the wrong way.

Mosta’s revival was cut shot though as Gustavo made it 5-3 with five minutes left, crowing a fine performance with shot from close distance to complete his hat-trick
