Manchester United head to Birmingham tomorrow looking to preserve their standing as the Barclays Premier League's top dogs, but Ryan Giggs is taking nothing for granted.

An unbeaten start to the season has helped United establish a firm grip on the title race, but ahead of a tricky trip to the Midlands, midfielder Giggs is urging caution.

"You are obviously wary because of the way the league has been this year," said Giggs.

"Anyone can beat anyone. We are thankful we remain unbeaten and confidence is high. But we realise that nothing can be taken for granted.

"It is a tough league and we need to be at our best in every game."

Birmingham return to action after their last two games were called off, and manager Alex McLeish says his players are raring to go.

"There's that mid-winter break we've all been asking for," McLeish joked.

"I don't think the players have lost any sharpness because we've had a really good week in training.

"They were like kids with toys, getting out on the grass, because we did have some problems clearing the snow from the grass in the previous week, so training was interrupted."

By the time United kick-off, they could have been replaced at the top of the table by Manchester City.

The blue half of Manchester host Aston Villa at 3pm, looking to improve their form at the City of Manchester Stadium.

"We must do better at home," manager Roberto Mancini said.

"Last week we were disappointed because if we had beaten Everton, we would have been top on Christmas Day for the first time in 81 years.

"For that reason it was important to restart with a victory. But the season is very long and we must improve again."

Another side looking to remain in the mix at the top of the table are Tottenham, who host Newcastle fresh from their outstanding 2-1 win at Aston Villa.

Their manager Harry Redknapp believes they are genuine title contenders and said: "I've not changed my mind. But we are massive outsiders - 33-1 or whatever - and that's about right I suppose.

"I keep saying it's open this season, and it's not impossible. You have got to believe you can achieve something."

Elsewhere on Tuesday, Sunderland take on Blackpool at the Stadium of Light, Stoke face struggling Fulham, Blackburn head to West Brom and Everton are in London to face West Ham.

The Hammers finally found their form against Fulham on Boxing Day, winning away from home for the first time in over a year, and manager Avram Grant hopes his men can pick up some momentum from that success.

He said: "Sometimes, when you win, it's also better than good training, so there's a psychological side. Maybe we can use the psychological side and continue with winning. We have the character also to play two games in three days."

Steven Gerrard makes a welcome return from a hamstring injury for Liverpool as they host basement side Wolves on Wednesday, while Chelsea return to action at Stamford Bridge against European hopefuls Bolton.

The midweek programme is wrapped up by Wigan's home clash with title contenders Arsenal.
