Gift of Life, the pro-life NGO, has thanked the government and the opposition for having ensured that Malta is represented at the plenary session of the Council of Europe being held this week, during which the Council will vote on a non-binding resolution for the de-criminalisation of abortion in all member states.
"Gift of Life calls upon the Maltese delegation, made up of representatives of both the government and the opposition, to continue to co-operate and agree on a common stand against the proposed resolution. The Maltese delegation is also encouraged to join forces with other member states voting against the said resolution," Gift of Life said.
The MLP in a statement said Leo Brincat, one of the Labour MPs attending the council session, this morning appealed to the socialist group in the Council of Europe to work with other parties so that the motion on the legalisation of abortion could be withdrawn.
He pointed out that this matter fell within the competence of national governments. Furthermore, the council should respect the unanimous position against abortion in countries such as Malta.
