Two 250MVA auto-transformers, the largest transformers to be installed in Enemalta’s network to date, have been shipped to Malta and will be transported to the new Magħtab Terminal station tonight, causing some temporary road closures. The transformers will be part of the interconnector cable with Sicily.

The transformers each have a shipping mass of 111 tonnes and when assembled and filled with oil, will reach 194 tonnes.

The first of the transformers will be transported tonight under police escort. The operation will be repeated on Wednesday night to minimise the impact on traffic.

The Magħtab Terminal Station will be linked to the recently commissioned Kappara Distribution Centre which will act as a connection point for power coming from the European Interconnctor to the 132kV network in Malta. Other high-voltage equipment such as 230kV and 132kV switchgear has already been delivered to the Maghtab terminal station and they are being installed.
