Kalkara 0
Gharghur 2

\n

Bottom-placed Kalkara played their best match of the season but were still not good enough to stop Gharghur from claiming the sole leadership in Division Three as the latter cruised home to their sixth successive victory in the league.

Gharghur pressed forward for most of the match and went close on various occasions through Keith Seychell, Daniel Bonello and Karl Vella Petroni.

Kalkara had their own chances too but seven minutes from time Bonello at last broke the deadlock for Gharghur with a well-taken volley.

Kalkara lost their rhythm and a minute from time they suffered a second goal from Antonio Sammut.

Gudja United 0
Birzebbuga 1

Promotion seekers Gudja suffered their first upset of the season as they were beaten by Birzebbuga, the all-important goal scored by Neville Farrugia in the first half.

The seasiders dictated the run of play for most of the opening stages and early on went close through Saviour Sacco.

At the other end, Mercieca twice denied Gudja on dangerous efforts by James Spiteri and Leslie Burke.

Birzebbuga nosed ahead when Farrugia's low drive, following an Antoine Sacco throughpass, beat the Gudja keeper hands down.

Just before the break Birzebbuga defender Dennis Baldacchino almost committed an own-goal as Gudja increased the pressure in their bid to save the match. Their efforts proved futile though as Birzebbuga held on for three precious points.

Ghaxaq 1
Luqa St Andrews 0

Despite playing for an hour with ten players, Ghaxaq were still strong enough to beat Luqa St Andrews.

Ghaxaq keeper Carter was sent off in the 29th minute after handling the ball just outside his penalty area. He was replaced in goal by midfielder Kevin Gambin.

After that Luqa held most of the initiative but it was Ghaxaq who scored the goal that mattered when the quick-thinking Sandro Lapira put the ball inside the opponents' net as the Luqa defenders failed to clear.

Xghajra Tornadoes 1
Zurrieq 2

Zurrieq stopped a negative sequence of two successive defeats against Gudja United and Siggiewi with this victory against Xghajra.

The Reds showed better ideas for most of the match. They deservedly took the lead in the 27th minute from a low Joseph Lia drive. Two minutes later Xghajra keeper Keith Galea made a difficult save to deny Michael Abdilla.

Early in the second half Xghajra striker Jason Galea was twice denied by the alert Zurrieq goalkeeper and 16 minutes from time Zurrieq practically made sure of the points with a second goal scored by Dino Bonnici.

Xghajra had substitute Alex Azzopardi sent off following an incident with an opponent but the Greens finished on a better note as Damien D'Amato scored a consolation goal right on the stroke of time.

Siggiewi 1
Kirkop United 1

This was a fair result in a balanced match which saw Siggiewi enjoying more possession but Kirkop showing better quality in their play.

The first period was a 50-50 affair even though Siggiewi could have taken the lead after only five minutes but Pierre Spiteri fumbled his chance when in an ideal scoring position. Kirkop's keeper Stephen Mizzi then lost the ball in a melee in his penalty area but Joe Farrugia cleared the ball to safety.

Siggiewi wasted two easy opportunities, through Roderick Farrugia and Joe Falzon, after the break and they paid dearly for this as Kirkop took the lead through Chris Farrugia.

But Siggiewi equalised five minutes later when Spiteri served Farrugia and the latter made no mistake to make it 1-1.

Sirens 2
Sta Lucija 4

Sta Lucija stayed in contention for a promotion slot after beating Sirens 4-2 in a match which saw Saints striker Kurt Grima scoring a hat-trick.

Sta Lucija opened the scoring just before the break following a fine Grima move. Just 24 seconds after the restart Grima doubled the Saints tally and on 52 minutes it was 3-0 after a Liam Cutajar goal.

Alan Medati reduced the arrears for Sirens and 14 minutes from time substitute Ryan Theuma scored again for the St Paul's Bay outfit to set up a tense finale.

However, Grima came to Sta Lucija's rescue with his third goal of the day to seal the points for his team, still unbeaten along with sole leaders Gharghur.

Referee: Edward Spiteri.
