Siġġiewi's Għar Lapsi bay is to get some much-needed maintenance in the days to come, with new wooden decking, concrete platforms, railings, signage and free Wi-Fi.

The emergency maintenance works were announced this afternoon by parliamentary secretaries Silvio Schembri and Deo Debattista during a press conference held on the shores of the picturesque swimming spot.

"As of tomorrow the government and Siġġiewi council will start urgent works," Dr Schembri wrote on Facebook. "Later on we will continue consulting on a more holistic project to beautify Għar Lapsi."

Free Wi-Fi will be provided in the area, which suffers from poor mobile connectivity, by the Malta Communications Authority.

Dr Schembri said he had stepped in after receiving multiple complaints about the shabby state of the bay.

Works are expected to be carried out by the Directorate of Cleansing Services, which forms part of Dr Debattista's portfolio.

New Siġġiewi mayor Alessia Psaila Zammit was also present for the press conference.

She said the council will be spending around €25,000 on new railings for the platforms, new notice boards for the area, other general maintenance and towards better safety at the swimming zone.

The council was also working to obtain planning permit for the building of new public toilets as well as for the embellishment of the Għar Lapsi Park.

Applications for EU funds for the road leading to Lapsi to be resurfaced had also been submitted.
