In-car kissing and cuddling causes injury to almost one in five participants, a survey revealed today.

As many as 17% of those who have got amorous in a vehicle have suffered some form of hurt, the poll by insurance company elephant.co.uk found.

Top of the injury list is a banged head, followed by a pulled muscle, bashed elbows and knees, a cricked neck and damage caused by the gear stick.

Of the 3,000 motorists polled, 56% have enjoyed some in-car love, with the back seat the most popular spot, although 6% admitted using the boot.

The most frisky motorists appear to be those from south west England, with 61% admitting in-car amorous adventures.

Northern Irish drivers are least likely to get romantic, with only 48% prepared to to get passionate in their motor.

Asked which car they thought would be best for some lovemaking, those polled opted first for a Volkswagen camper van, followed by a Rolls-Royce, an Aston Martin, a Land Rover Discovery and a Volvo Estate.

Elephant.co.uk managing director Brian Martin said: "I was surprised to see so many people admit they've used their cars in this way.

"The results show people's passion is a spur-of-the-moment thing - it seems some people just can't wait for the bedroom."
