Budding diplomats at the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies are to continue benefiting from the academic expertise of a German chair, after an existing agreement was extended to 2019.

The agreement with the German government will allow MEDAC to benefit from the continuation of the German Chair for Peace Studies and Conflict Prevention up to autumn 2019. The Chair was inaugurated in October 2009 and the first holder is Monika Wohlfeld, an internationally recognized expert in conflict and security studies.

Foreign Minister George Vella, Germany's Ambassador to Malta Gudrun Sräga and MEDAC director Stepher Calleya signed the agreement.

The minister thanked the German government for its support, saying it confirmed the country's interest in the Mediterranean. Ambassador Sräga emphasised that Germany’s renewed commitment also honoured the excellent work and the outstanding academic services MEDAC has provided since 1990. Prof. Calleya thanked both governments for backing the Academy.

MEDAC is an institution of higher learning within the University of Malta. It offers advanced degrees in diplomacy and conflict resolution with a focus on Mediterranean issues to serving or aspiring diplomats from the Mediterranean region and beyond. Since its inception over 25 years ago, MEDAC has trained more than 700 alumni from 60 countries.
