The Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany was awarded to Stephen Calleya last Wednesday.

The official ceremony was held at the residence of German Ambassador Bernd Braun, who bestowed the Order on behalf of the GermanPresident.

Prof. Calleya is director of the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies (Medac) and is a renowned expert in Euro-Mediterranean affairs.

Ambassador Braun paid tribute to the work of Prof. Calleya, whose efforts led to the establishment of the German Chair for PeaceStudies and Conflict Resolutionat Medac in 2009 and to close institutional links between Medac and German academic institutions.

Throughout his career, Prof. Calleya has championed regional co-operation and integration through academic and policy-oriented programmes andinitiatives.

The Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany was instituted in 1951 by Federal President Theodor Heuss. It is the only honour that may be awarded in all fields of endeavour and is the highest tribute Germany can pay to individuals for services to the nation.

The Order of Merit may be awarded to Germans as well as to foreigners for achievements in the political, economic, social or intellectual realms and for all kinds of outstanding services to the nation in the field of social, charitable or philanthropic work.
