A Georgian man who was carrying €35,058 in cash while on his way to catch a flight at Malta International Airport has had €25,058 confiscated by a court after he was convicted of not having declared that he was carrying more cash than allowed by the law.

Merab Beridze, 47, was also fined the statutory 25% fine on the full amount which worked out at €8764.50. 

Mr Beridze was arrested last Tuesday. In terms of the law, travellers cannot carry more than €10,000 in cash.
