George Hyzler has informed the Prime Minister that he is unable to continue serving as acting President, for personal reasons.

He thanked Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and his predecessor President Emeritus Eddie Fenech Adami for the confidence shown in him in the past 10 years.

Dr Gonzi expressed his appreciation, that of the government and the people for the service Dr Hyzler gave the country saying that his long career in public and political life had been inspired by the values of solidarity and honesty.

In the meantime, former Speaker Anton Tabone has been appointed acting President while President George Abela is abroad on a private visit.

In a statement, the Nationalist Party thanked Dr Hyzler for his service to the country.
