It was a positive day for the Maltese tennis players in Iceland yesterday as Elaine Genovese and Katrina Sammut reached the women’s doubles final while Matthew Asciak and Sammut progressed to the last eight of the singles competition.

The best result of the day was obtained by Genovese and Sammut who will contest the gold medal match after they had the better of Icelandic pair Gronholm and Gudmundsdottir 6-4 6-2.

In men’s singles, Asciak found little difficulty in beating San Marino’s top player Marco De Rossi 6-1 6-1.

He will be up against Raphael Calzi, of Luxembourg, for a place in the semi-finals today.

Sammut also found little problems in overcoming home player Anna-Sofia Gronholm with a comfortable 6-2 6-3 win.

Her opponent in today’s quarter-final will be Danka Kovinic, of Montenegro.

Bradley Callus, however, found the going tough against Iceland’s Birkir Gunnarsson who eased to a 6-2 6-1 victory.

Callus then teamed up with Asciak in the doubles tournament but they went down to Luxembourg’s pair 6-3 6-2.

Beach volley

• Alison Borg and Gertrude Zarb failed to muster the difficult weather conditions in Reykjavik as they went down to Monaco 2-0.

Borg and Zarb lost the opening set 21-18 but they looked on the verge of forcing a decider when they had a set point at 20-19.

However, they failed to kill off their opponents and Monaco won the points that mattered most to seal the match. Today, Malta play against Liechtenstein.

Table tennis

• Jessica Pace and Victoria Luc-henkova progressed to the semi-finals of the teams competition.

They opened the day with a 3-2 upset to Montenegro but then had the better of San Marino 3-1 to finish second in the group and reach the last four.
