The original George Cross awarded to Malta in 1942 is to be on permanent display at the President's Palace in Valletta, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi announced this evening.

He was speaking at a ceremony in St George's Square during which the presentation of the cross to Malta was re-enacted. The Duke of Gloucester was the guest of honour during the reenactment.

The event started with Mass at St John's CoCathedral and was followed with the police band marching to the square.

Following the arrival of dignitaries, President George Abela inspected an AFM guard of honour.

An audiovisual presentation running through Malta's experience of the war with projections onto the Palace wall and narration accompanied by actors in period costume and dancers followed.

The ceremony came to an end with the reenactment and brief speeches by the Duke of Gloucester, the President and the Prime Minister.
