The gbejniet (goat cheese) industry is alive and healthy, and some producers may even export the product, according to information given in Parliament.

Resources and Rural Affairs Minister George Pullicino said that 410 producers are licensed to produce gbejniet, of which 96 are in Gozo.

Asked about inspections of the facilities over the past two years, Mr Pullicino said the veterinary service made 126 inspections of farms producing gbejniet in Malta and 16 in Gozo. He said that all farms having more than 10 animals were being inspected to establish those which could apply for authorisation to export gbejniet.

Farms with less than 10 consumers are considered as being small, traditional establishments which may sell their products directly to consumers.
