The Malta Gay Rights Movement (MGRM) has presented a petition to the Nationalist Party requesting that gender reassignment surgery and hormone therapy be included in the national health service.
The petition, which has garnered 1,084 signatures, also calls for the formal recognition of the rights of same sex couples.
The MGRM said that in a meeting with PN representatives it was made clear that for the PN, the definition of marriage is strictly that of a union between a man and a woman, and, therefore, same-sex marriage was out of the question. Nonetheless, the PN was committed to addressing the rights of cohabitating persons.
The MGRM said the position expressed by the PN representatives during the meeting laid the groundwork for further constructive discussion in future.
It said it hopes that this will result in concrete policy actions should the PN be re-elected.
The meeting was attended by Education Minister Louis Galea, MEP Simon Busuttil and PN secretary general Joe Saliba.
