Health authorities are probing a sudden illness which left 35 prison inmates suffering from symptoms of gastritis between Wednesday night and yesterday morning.

It is not yet clear whether this was the result of food poisoning or some form of virus.

This was confirmed by Corradino Correctional Facility CEO Simon Buttigieg who spoke with the Times of Malta.

He said that the cause had not been ascertained yet as not all inmates were affected. For this reason health authorities had been called to look into the matter.

Mr Buttigieg added that all those affected were doing well and no new cases have since been recorded.
