A gastritis outbreak among prison inmates has prompted the health authorities to launch an investigation.

Simon Buttigieg, the Corradino Correctional Facility CEO, said 35 inmates had been affected between Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.

Referring to reports that the prisoners had been suffering from food poisoning, Mr Buttigieg noted the cause had not been ascertained yet and health authorities were looking into the possibility that the sudden outbreak could have been caused by a virus.

He said no new cases were reported yesterday and that those affected had recovered.
