Last weekend, the Malta Cycling Federation completed its annual mass start calendar of the season. The event, held in Xaghra, Gozo, attracted over 40 riders who braved the hot weather and scorching sun. Anthony Attard, the locality's mayor, gave the starting signal.

Mosta CC's Richard Galea had a very good performance as he powered his bicycle to victory. He was closely followed by Birkirkara SJ duo Etienne Bonello and Jack Schiavone.

Upcoming talent Roderick Muscat (Pamsons), once again, underlined his credentials at the Xaghra race after winning the race for juniors. Steve Sciberras (Mosta CC) was second, shadowed by Pamsons rider Chris Caruana.

Nicky Farrugia (BSJ) outsprinted Paul Bonello (Mosta CC) to victory in the Masters category. Charlie Sammut, of BSJ, was third.

Talented Adrian Sciberras (Mosta CC) cycled all the way to the finish line unopposed in the U-15s. Pamsons' duo Sheldon Galea and Chris Caruana were second and third respectively. Pamsons CC rider Danica Spiteri won the ladies class.

After the race, the various road championship winners were presented with trophies by representatives from main sponsors Red Bull whose support is needed to bolster the sport which is always gaining in popularity.

Bonello was top in the Elite category, Muscat in the juniors section and Sciberras the U-15 winner. Farrugia and Spiteri were the winning riders in the Masters and Ladies categories respectively.

On Sunday, the 2002/03 cycling season will come to an end with the remaining event on the calendar - a time trial at Ta' Penellu, Mellieha.
