Trade between Malta and China has increased by some 140 per cent over the past four years with Malta being the only EU country that experienced an increase in trade with China last year Malta’s ambassador to China Karl Xuereb said.

Speaking during a visit by the president of the Malta Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise Helga Ellul to the vice-chairman of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) Yu Ping, Mr Xuereb said the increase was of almost 10 per cent.

Ms Ellul and Mr Yu discussed further cooperation and strengthening of ties. The visit took place during the last day of the Malta Enterprise trade delegation in Beijing.

Mr Yu informed Ms Ellul that a delegation from CCPIT was heading to Malta in June.

Ms Ellul said she looked forward to meeting the delegation in Malta and added that Malta continued to strive to make its business environment ever more conducive to profitable enterprise.

She said that the government’s Vision 2015 remained a top priority as Malta endeavoured to develop those high value-added areas where the country had the potential to excel and become a centre of excellence.

Ambassador Xuereb and Ms Ellul will be visiting Ningbo on the second leg of their journey with the Maltese Trade Delegation.

In Ningbo and Shanghai delegates will have further business discussions and they will attend the launch of Malta Day at the Shanghai EXPO on Friday.
