The planning authority has signed an agreement with a number of councils to fund 13 projects in the localities.

The sum of more than €500,000 is being made available to these councils through the Urban Improvement Fund (UIF) scheme, which is operated by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority. The urban improvement projects include the upgrading of a playing field and embellishment of a public garden in San Ġwann, new energy-saving and anti-pollution street lighting in Gozo, and paving works around a number of streets in Fgura, Birkirkara, Msida, Rabat and Gżira.

Set up in October 2006, the fund has accumulated €7.4 million. Its committee has so far approved148 projects worth over €4.7 million.
