As someone from Vittoriosa, I feel nothing but contempt for the authorities with regard to the situation surrounding Fort St Angelo.
This place could be one of Malta's top tourist attractions if restored and properly maintained.
During my visits to Malta every two years, I never miss standing under the fort and seeing all the destruction being wrought by neglect. I cannot understand why all the trees growing in the protruding edges are not removed.
I suggest that some really caring people take matters into their own hands, and clean and refurbish the fort.
In New York, when the Statue of Liberty was in danger of closing, the whole city was falling apart in the 1970s. The CEO of Chrysler, Lee Iacocca, started a nationwide campaign, collecting money for the restoration of the statue. He collected millions and the statue was restored within a few years. The same thing should be done for Fort St Angelo.
All patriotic Maltese around the world will be glad to contribute to such an important historic site that we all grew up admiring.
